The fabric used in traditional Japanese Kakejiku, hanging scrolls, is called kireji, a term that means "torn fabric" in Japanese. In times when textiles were precious, monks would tear old robes and garments into strips for scroll mounting —a practice that gave the fabric its name. During the Kamakura period, the influence of Zen Buddhism helped spread the culture of hanging scrolls. In the Muromachi period, as the tea ceremony flourished, the textiles used in scroll mounting became increasingly refined in both design and material. Many of the patterns still seen today have roots over 1,300 years old, introduced to Japan via the Silk Road. Some even preserve motifs symbolizing imbued with a spirit of prayer, carefully woven using traditional techniques passed down through generations. Today, as the demand for hanging scrolls declines, the weaving traditions behind these fabrics —ong preserved in places like Nishijin —are at risk of disappearing. Yet in every inch of cloth lies the quiet imprint of a thousand years of artistry. Rather than being machine-stitched, each piece is carefully rolled and sewn by hand, one by one. This technique is known in France as roulottage, a traditional finishing method also used for luxury scarves by the world’s most prestigious maisons, including Hermès. This handwork gives the edges a naturally soft, rounded, three-dimensional finish.
When placed in the pocket, the fabric rises beautifully and creates a gentle, elegant expression at the chest. The subtle tension and fullness achieved through the artisan’s touch cannot be replicated through mass production or machine finishing alone.
